Making a garment toile

  • We suggest making a basic toile or prototype of your garment first. Use an inexpensive or leftover fabric (calico, muslin or an old sheet) but in a similar handle and drape to your final cloth. This way, you can make quick alternations to get the perfect fit and length adjustments. The toile is especially useful if you have unique fabrics such as vintage textiles or fabrics that have been stashed away waiting for that perfect garment. Even confident pattern-makers and sewists in the fashion industry still make a toile to adjust and practice sewing some trickier details.
